Ascites is the term used for a pathological accumulation of free fluid in the abdominal cavity, or more precisely the peritoneal cavity. The term is used for both the clinical picture and the fluid. Ascites is always a sign of a serious disease.
Especially tumour patients with advanced tumour disease can be affected by "malignant ascites".
Ascites only causes problems when larger amounts of fluid have accumulated and the abdominal girth visibly increases. A feeling of pressure and pain can occur.
However, in about every tenth person affected, the accumulation of water in the abdomen is caused by cancer.
If a tumour is the cause, it is called "malignant ascites".
Other causes that can lead to ascites are, for example, reduced heart or kidney function or inflammation of the peritoneum or pancreas.
