Streptococci are a widespread type of bacteria, of which many different strains exist.

Most of these strains are harmless and live in or on the human body - mainly in the intestines, mouth, throat and vagina.

Some strains, however, can cause diseases under certain circumstances.

The bacterium attacks the respiratory tract, causes inflammation of the throat and lungs, abscesses can form around the teeth.

The bacterium can cause inflammation of the mammary glands.

The bacterium does not causally cause breast carcinomas, but may be involved in their development.

The bacterium can cause chronic inflammation of the joints, especially the knee joint.
