Causes:
Acne is caused by a combination of factors, including:
- Overproduction of sebum (skin oil).
- Clogged hair follicles due to oil and dead skin cells.
- Bacteria, especially Propionibacterium acnes.
- Inflammation.
Risk factors:
- Hormonal changes, especially during puberty, menstruation or pregnancy.
- Genetic predisposition.
- Certain medications that affect hormones.
- Diet, stress and environmental factors can also play a role.
Symptoms:
- Blackheads (open comedones) and whiteheads (closed comedones).
- Papules, pustules, nodules and cysts.
- Redness and swelling of the skin.
Treatment:
Treatment for acne may include topical and oral medications, such as:
- Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.
- Retinoids.
- Antibiotics.
- Hormonal treatments, such as birth control pills.
- In severe cases, isotretinoin or other systemic therapies may be used.
Prevention and care:
- Regular cleansing of the skin with mild cleansers.
- Avoid excessive washing or aggressive skin care products.
- Use of non-comedogenic (non-pore-clogging) skin care and cosmetic products.
Worth knowing:
- Acne affects people of all ages, but is most common in teenagers.
- Although acne is not life-threatening, it can be emotionally distressing and leave scars.
Research:
Research on acne focuses on the development of new treatments, the role of diet and the genetic factors that contribute to the condition.
