Lexicon: A
Astrovirus and frequency therapy
Definition:
Astroviruses are a genus of small, non-enveloped RNA viruses belonging to the Astroviridae family. They are known to cause gastrointestinal infections in humans and animals, especially gastroenteritis.
Characteristics:
- Genome:
Consists of a single-stranded RNA with positive polarity. - Structure:
The viruses are round and have a diameter of around 28 to 30 nanometres. They have a characteristic star-shaped surface, which gives them their name (Greek "astron" means star). - Transmission:
Mainly faecal-oral, through contaminated food or water and through direct contact with infected persons.
Diseases:
Astroviruses are a common cause of gastroenteritis, especially in young children, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. The infection leads to symptoms such as
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Fever (occasionally)
Diagnosis:
Diagnosis is usually made by detecting the virus in stool samples using molecular techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or electron microscopy.
Treatment:
There is no specific antiviral treatment for astrovirus infections. Therapy focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing dehydration through adequate fluid intake and electrolyte replacement.
Prevention:
- Hygiene:
Regular hand washing and good sanitary practices can reduce the risk of infection. - Food safety:
Careful preparation and storage of food to avoid contamination.
Significance:
Astroviruses are found worldwide and are a significant cause of viral gastroenteritis. Although the infections are usually mild, they can lead to more serious illnesses in certain population groups. Research is focussed on the development of vaccines and better diagnostic methods.
