Cystitis and frequency therapy
Definition of cystitis:
A bladder infection, medically known as cystitis, is an inflammation of the urinary bladder that is usually caused by a bacterial infection. It is a common form of urinary tract infection (UTI) and mainly affects women.
causes of cystitis:
- Bacterial infections:
The most common cause is the invasion of bacteria, particularly *Escherichia coli* (E. coli), from the intestine into the urethra and bladder. - Sexual intercourse:
Can increase the risk of cystitis as bacteria can enter the urinary tract. - Hormonal changes:
Especially during the menopause, which make the mucous membrane of the urinary tract more susceptible. - Other factors:
Narrowing of the urinary tract, incomplete emptying of the bladder, use of bladder catheters.
Symptoms Cystitis:
- Frequent urge to urinate, even with small amounts of urine
- Burning or pain when urinating - Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
- Blood in the urine (haematuria)
- Pressure or pain in the lower abdomen
- General malaise or slight fever
Diagnosis of cystitis:
Diagnosis is based on medical history and physical examination. A urine test is carried out to detect bacteria and white blood cells. In some cases, a urine culture may be performed to identify the specific pathogen.
treatment of cystitis:
- Antibiotics:
Often prescribed to treat the bacterial infection. The choice of antibiotic depends on the type of bacteria and the severity of the infection. - Painkillers:
To relieve pain and discomfort. - Home remedies:
Drink plenty of fluids to flush the bladder and heat treatments to relieve pain.
prevention:
- Adequate fluid intake to flush the urinary tract.
- Regular urination, especially after sexual intercourse.
- Wiping from front to back after using the toilet to prevent the spread of bacteria. - Avoid irritating hygiene products in the genital area.
Worth knowing:
- Bladder infections are more common in women than in men due to the shorter urethra.
- Recurrent bladder infections can indicate underlying problems and should be checked out by a doctor.
Research:
Research into cystitis is focussed on developing new antibiotics and vaccines, improving diagnostic methods and investigating the mechanisms that lead to recurrent infections.
