Purulent infections and Staphylococcus aureus
Purulent infections and Staphylococcus aureus: causes, symptoms and treatment
What are purulent infections?
Purulent infections are caused by the accumulation of pus - a mixture of bacteria, dead cells and immune cells - in tissues or organs. These infections often occur as a reaction to bacterial infections and can take various forms, such as skin abscesses, boils or organ abscesses
The role of Staphylococcus aureus
Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens causing purulent infections. Although the bacterium is part of the normal skin flora, it can cause infections in wounds or if the immune system is weakened. The methicillin-resistant variant (MRSA) is particularly problematic as it is more difficult to treat
Symptoms of purulent infections
- Reddened, swollen and painful skin areas
- Pus secretion or yellowish crusts
- Fever and general malaise in severe cases
- Organ-specific symptoms, such as shortness of breath or abdominal pain
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis is made by clinical examination, imaging and microbiological tests. Treatment includes
- Antibiotics: Targeted antibiotic therapy depending on the pathogen.
- Incision and drainage: Surgical opening and draining of larger abscesses.
- Wound care: Careful cleaning of the affected area.
- Additional measures: Treatment of underlying diseases.
Prevention
- Regular hygiene and skin care
- Immediate treatment of minor wounds
- No sharing of personal hygiene items
- Promote a strong immune system through a healthy lifestyle
