Ernst Chladni
Biographical data:
Ernst Florens Friedrich Chladni was born on 30 November 1756 in Wittenberg and died on 3 April 1827 in Breslau.
Profession and achievements:
Ernst Chladni was a German physicist and musician who is often referred to as the "father of acoustics". He is particularly well known for his research in the field of vibration theory and acoustics, especially for the discovery of the Chladni figures named after him.
Important discoveries:
Chladni developed a method to visualise standing waves on metallic plates by sprinkling sand on the plates and causing them to vibrate. These experiments led to the discovery of the Chladni figures. He also investigated the pitches of various materials and instruments and published his findings in his work "Acoustics" (1802).
Contribution to science:
Chladni's work has influenced the foundations of modern acoustics and vibration theory. His methods and discoveries are still used in research and technology today.
