The uterus: structure, functions and health aspects
Structure of the uterus
The uterus, also known as the womb, has a pear-shaped structure and is located in the pelvis. It consists of the cervix, the uterine body (corpus) and the fallopian tubes (fundus)
Its wall has three layers:
- Endometrium: The inner mucosal layer that is shed during menstruation.
- Myometrium: The thick muscle layer that enables contractions during labour.
- Perimetrium: The outer protective layer.
Functions of the uterus
- Reproduction: Protection and nutrient supply of the embryo during pregnancy.
- Menstrual cycle: Growth and shedding of the uterine lining.
- Birth: Support through labour during delivery.
Common diseases of the uterus
- Myomas: Benign tumours in the uterine musculature.
- Endometriosis: Growth of the uterine lining outside the uterus.
- Uterine polyps: Benign mucosal growths.
- Cervical cancer: A serious disease that can be recognised through screening.
Prevention and health promotion
- Regular gynaecological examinations and Pap tests.
- Healthy diet and regular exercise.
- HPV vaccination to prevent cervical cancer.
- Medical clarification of unusual symptoms.
