Skin abscesses and Staphylococcus aureus
Skin abscesses and Staphylococcus aureus: What you should know
What is a skin abscess?
A skin abscess occurs when the immune system reacts to an infection. Pus, a mixture of white blood cells, dead tissue and bacteria, collects in an encapsulated tissue cavity. They often occur in areas with hair follicles or heavy sweating
The role of Staphylococcus aureus
Staphylococcus aureus is the most common bacterium that causes skin abscesses. It is part of the natural skin flora, but can infect deeper layers of skin in the event of injury or a weakened immune system. The resistant variant MRSA is particularly dangerous
Symptoms of a skin abscess
- Redness and swelling
- Pain and warmth in the affected area
- Accumulation of pus and possible drainage
- Fever and general malaise in severe cases
Treatment
- Warm compresses: Promote the flow of pus in small abscesses.
- Incision and drainage: Medical opening and draining of larger abscesses.
- Antibiotics: Targeted medication for bacterial infections, especially MRSA.
- Wound care: Regular cleaning to prevent re-infection.
Prevention
- Regular skin care and hygiene
- Immediate treatment of cuts and wounds
- No sharing of razors or towels
- Strengthen the immune system through a healthy lifestyle
