**Definition:**
Infertility is the inability of a couple to achieve pregnancy after one year of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. It can affect both men and women and has many causes.
**Causes in women:**
- **Ovulation disorders:** Problems with ovulation, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or dysfunction of the pituitary gland.
- **Tubal problems:** Blockages or damage to the fallopian tubes, often due to infections or endometriosis.
- **Uterine abnormalities:** Malformations or fibroids that can interfere with the implantation of the egg.
- **Age:** Fertility decreases with age, especially after the age of 35.
**Causes in men:**
- **Sperm problems:** Low sperm count, poor sperm motility or abnormal sperm shape.
- **Hormonal imbalances:** Imbalances that affect sperm production.
- **Genetic factors:** Hereditary diseases that affect fertility.
- **Environmental and lifestyle factors:** Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, drug use and environmental toxins.
**Diagnosis:**
- **In women:** Hormone tests, ultrasound, hysterosalpingography (X-ray examination of the fallopian tubes) and laparoscopy.
- **In men:** Semen analysis, hormone tests and genetic tests.
**Treatment:**
- **Medication:** To promote ovulation in women or to improve sperm production in men.
- **Surgical interventions:** To correct structural problems in women or men.
- **Assisted reproductive techniques (ART):** In vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and intrauterine insemination (IUI).
- **Lifestyle changes:** Healthy diet, regular exercise, avoiding alcohol and smoking.
