Lexicon: L
Lymphatic system and frequency therapy
Definition:
The lymphatic system is an essential part of the immune system and consists of a network of lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes and lymphatic organs. It plays a decisive role in the defence against infections, the removal of waste products from the tissue and the regulation of fluid balance in the body.Components:
- Lymphatic vessels:
A widely ramified network that transports lymph, a clear fluid containing white blood cells, especially lymphocytes. - Lymph nodes:
Small, bean-shaped structures distributed along the lymph vessels. They filter the lymph and fight pathogens. - -Lymphatic organs:
These include the spleen, the thymus gland, the tonsils and the bone marrow, all of which fulfil important functions in the immune system.
Functions:
- Immune defence:
The lymphatic system recognises and fights pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. - Fluid balance:
It removes excess fluid from the tissue and returns it to the bloodstream to prevent swelling. - Transport of fats:
It transports fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the intestine into the bloodstream.
Diseases:
- Lymphoedema:
A swelling caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system, often following surgery or radiotherapy. - Lymphadenopathy:
Enlarged lymph nodes that may indicate infection, autoimmune disease or cancer. - Lymphomas:
Cancers that develop in the lymphatic system, such as Hodgkin's lymphoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Diagnosis:
- Imaging procedures:
Ultrasound, CT or MRI to assess lymph nodes and lymphatic organs. - Biopsy:
Removal of tissue samples from lymph nodes to examine for cancer or other diseases. - Blood tests:
To check the function of the immune system and to detect infections.
Prevention and care:
- Healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise to support the lymphatic system.
- Avoid infections through good hygiene practices.
- Regular medical check-ups for early detection of diseases of the lymphatic system.
Worth knowing:
- The lymphatic system works closely with the circulatory system to protect and cleanse the body.
- Lymph nodes often swell during infections as they are actively involved in fighting pathogens.
Research:
Research focuses on understanding the role of the lymphatic system in various diseases, developing new therapies for lymphoma and lymphoedema and improving diagnostic methods.
